Gender-based violence, as defined by UNHCR, includes sexual, physical, mental, and economic harm inflicted on an individual based on their gender.
Women all over the world are victims of deep-rooted patriarchy. During the COVID-19 lockdown, unemployment, lack of support and access to external resources have drastically increased the prevalence of GBV.
Ladli Foundation USA addresses these issues by amplifying awareness surrounding programs initiated by UNHCR identifying GBV as a global crisis to work towards upliftment and empowerment of women in the USA. Our belief in fighting for women's rights under the ambit of sustainable living through development programs such as yoga, mental health sessions and meditation will go a long way in eradicating concerning issues.
To achieve the UN Sustainable Goal 5 i.e., Gender Equality, Ladli Foundation USA shall operate at two levels in this project – undertaking preventive practices and providing relief to survivors.
GBV originates from the ancient and traditional belief that it is normal to oppress a gender because they are second-class citizens. Ladli Foundation USA understands that what is needed to end GBV is a shift in our psychology and understanding of gender rather than acting after a crime happens. It imparts awareness among people through logic and reason. It aims to change the social conscience through individual transformation.
Ladli involves schools and colleges in its awareness programs. A central part of school-based violence prevention is working directly with children to investigate the root causes of violence. We teach them skills to recognize violence, stay safe, resolve conflicts nonviolently, deal with emotions, seek help and help someone else who may have experienced violence in the curriculum. This has practical and long-term benefit.

Other awareness camps will be conducted at colleges, community centres and other public places. The awareness campaign will mainly include three areas:
Under the relief approach, Ladli Foundation will work along with NGOs, civil societies, government and religious organizations to reach the survivors. Upon their consent, they can engage in various activities based on their individual requirements. This will be monitored by experts in relevant departments.
- Psychosexuality – Bringing awareness about the different types of gender, gender identities and the necessity for individuals to respect one another regardless of gender type and identity.
- Socio-cultural – Creating awareness on how different cultures and traditions have, over centuries, mistreated genders and how we still are conditioned to believe them in a modern society.
- Impact of pornography – Creating awareness on how pornography has distorted the idea of sexual relationships by creating unrealistic fantasies and projecting perverted forms of love-making as true love and how these contribute to the derogation of women and people of other genders.

- Meditation: Meditation techniques are gradually being used to treat and prevent a variety of mental illnesses including depression, substance-related disorders, PTSD and dependent issues.
- Therapy and group sessions: Relief often comes from talking to a trained professional who does not judge us at all and perceives our experiences, pains, and raw emotions. It's powerful when we realize that we're not alone, weird, or broken.
- Support groups: Support groups can be essential to survivors' psychosocial well-being, particularly in resource-poor settings, where there may be fewer mental health providers.
