Shagun is a word derived from Sanskrit, which means auspicious, good omen or blessing.
Shagun or offering of gifts is a way of bringing blessings and harmony to the lives of people. When you are offering Shagun to a newly married couple, you are offering your prayers to them as they are entering into a new life.
Marriages are considered a source of joy and celebrations. However, this is not the case for families of the marginalised sections of society. The marriage of a girl is a burden and a chore to complete.
The birth of a male child is a matter of great joy and festivities in any family. But it's the time to mourn in the highest decibels of despair if an innocent girl is born in the family of lower strata as it's considered that her birth brings in the lifelong baggage of dowry. From the inception, efforts are made to save money for her marriage, and other significant spheres of life such as educational and extra-curricular growth take a back seat.
Destitution is so deeply rooted that getting their daughters married at an early age provides them social security. Unfortunately, this is a big reason for young girls' child marriages, trafficking, and forced prostitution.
Ladli believes that the most vulnerable and victimised prey in India today is an "Uneducated Unmarried Girl." The Shagun initiative primarily focuses on providing Health, Education & Skills Development for adolescents and young women. Secondly, it involves the masses helping underprivileged families with their daughter's education, health, and marriages by catering to their traditional beliefs & rituals of Navratra Kanya-Pujan and Mass Marriages.
We believe that supporting the underprivileged families for their daughter's wedding through systematic Mass Marriages will encourage them to provide her education & well-being. It will also help against her child marriage.

At Ladli, it is believed that if the expenses incurred for the girl's marriage are helped with, they are less likely to drop out of school and even work in the future. We help girls who want to get married at a certain age by arranging mass community weddings thorough background verification of the prospective grooms. Through Shagun, thousands of girls could acquire their dream of a happy marriage, which due to financial constraints, was impossible. By this initiative, the UN Sustainable goals of Health, Education & Gender Equality are promoted.
The founder of Ladli, Devendra Gupta's combat with dowry demands on personal levels, encouraged him to help underprivileged families bear these expenses and verify the groom for their daughter. Through the concept of mass marriage, we involve community leaders to save girls from social victimisation, evil practices, and organised sex racket.
Ladli Foundation undertook the magnanimous task of executing mass marriages of 1100 girls; apart from this, we also took the entire expense of these marriages on our shoulders without any government aid.

Following Activities will be carried out under the Shagun initiative:
Organizing mass wedding events by involving community leaders and Govt. Administration by verifying the criminal background of the groom for his involvement with organized sex rackets or trafficking groups.
Providing her 3 Years Health Insurance & Organising their Marriage Aniversary to give her social support and motivate against female foeticide
Connecting privileged families with underprivileged to take the responsibility of their daughter's education and health through social adoption by organising Navratra Kanya-Pujan events.
Distributing education & Personal Hygiene Kits for adolescent girls in slums.
We at Ladli take the responsibility to verify the family background and the history sheet of each groom that he holds no criminal record or is not involved with any trafficking or organised prostitution groups, only then the knot is tied, and his line of action does not stop there, he pays a visit after every three months to ensure the safety of these girls. The idea was validated when the review statistics appeared. An official police certificate supported the stats. To everyone's astonishment, not even a single girl became the victim of dowry domestic violence they all are living their married lives happily and with self-esteem. All this has been achieved without any Governmental aid.
