Field Trips

CONNECTING KIDS TO REAL FOOD

Convivium’s interactive youth field trips focus on exposure to real food and hands-on experiences of how to grow and prepare it. Through our informative tour and engaging activities, kids will be encouraged to try new herbs and vegetables they harvest themselves in our neighborhood gardens; they will learn simple ways they can prepare familiar food themselves; and they will experience how different aspects of the food system impact their lives.

Students can visit our backyard chickens that provide eggs for our restaurant, meet the worms that live in our basement turning our kitchen’s food scraps into compost, and can taste their way around the neighborhood as they tour our gardens and facility. They can also participate in cooking demonstrations and taste the fruits of their labor.

Our hope is, and we have seen it happen, that this exposure and these hands-on experiences increase a child’s willingness to try new foods, encourage them to continue learning about the many aspects of our food system, and inspire them to be good stewards of our environment, because they see themselves as a part of it all.

FIELD TRIP DETAILS

Our field trips include a 45-60 minute, interactive tour of our gardens and kitchens that is catered to the students' age group, adjusted based on the time of year or weather, and can focus on aligned topics students are learning in the classroom.

For groups larger than 25 students, we will divide into two smaller groups to rotate through the garden and kitchens tour.  For groups larger than 45 students, we will divide into 3 smaller groups to rotate through the garden & kitchens tour.  See below for additional enrichment activity options (and associated fees).

Field trip tours are $5 per student and must be scheduled at least one month in advance.  There are scholarship funds available to help cover or offset any costs that may be limiting to your group. See below for scholarship information.

If you have questions or are ready to schedule a field trip, please email our Program Coordinator, Jessica.
