CREATING COMMUNITY AROUND FOODConvivium's annual events truly embody our core values and the reason that Convivium was founded -- to help foster connection to ourselves, to our community and to our environment.
They bring people together -- old and new friends, people who live in a different part of town than you, people whose political leanings differ from yours, or travelers passing through -- to share a *home* cooked, locally grown meal and remind ourselves of the things that connect us (food, being our favorite) and that make us feel part of a community again. |
Souper Bowl SundayCelebrated the Sunday before the Super Bowl
Souper Bowl Sunday is an event that raises awareness about food insecurity in the Dubuque community and raises funds for St. Stephen’s Food Bank, a branch of Riverbend Food Bank, as well as Convivium. Upon arrival, attendees select a handmade ceramic soup bowl made, and generously donated by local artists, that they can then fill with soups that were made and donated by local restaurants. It is a casual and fun event where people can mingle, continue trying and enjoying the varieties of soups, and hear from 1-2 speakers about each year’s event focus (some aspect of food insecurity and inequity in our community). |
Community Pancake BreakfastCelebrated the last Saturday in April
A true community-led project – this event starts in late winter when Convivium helps local residents tap and collect sap from their backyard maple tree! Over the next couple of weeks, these residents continue to collect the sap and then deliver it back to Convivium where we begin to boil it all down (it takes about 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup). Then, the last Saturday in April, we host a Pay-what-you-can Pancake Breakfast from 9 am to noon – where everyone is welcome to come enjoy delicious pancakes topped with the freshly made maple syrup. |
Neighborhood Open HouseCelebrated the first Sunday in August
Our annual Neighborhood Open House showcases Convivium's facility, neighborhood gardens, community outreach and programming. Whether you have been here multiple times or having been wanting to check us out -- this is your chance to get an inside look with a free, guided tour and learn more about who we are! Tours are hosting on the hour and we offer food and drink specials on our patio. The Open House is hosted in partnership with the North End Neighborhood Association and funded in part by a Small Neighborhood Grant from the City of Dubuque. |
