Handbells and brass instruments will join with the Choral Society in December in joyous holiday works by two celebrated women composers — Libby Larsen and Cecilia McDowall — plus shorter works from many different traditions (and a glimpse of Bach’s Mass in B minor!). Orff – Carmina Burana
Sunday, March 12, 4 PM
This concert presents two stories, one of a young Kurdish refugee who travelled hundreds of miles from war-torn Syria in her wheelchair, and the other the poignant photographic images of early 20th century Durham residents. Two significant works invite us to seek deeper understanding in the words of Nujeen Mustafa, and in the faces of unnamed citizens of different races that will be shown as we hear their imagined words.
McDowall – The Girl from Aleppo
Bussewitz-Quarm – Where We Find Ourselves
With the Durham Children’s Choir and Riverside High School Choir
March 11, 2023, 4 PM and 7 PM
Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Durham, NC
We close our season with Bach’s monumental Mass in B minor, a work intended to summarize and showcase all the compositional technique and expressivity that this great composer had amassed during his life. Each movement has its own style and stamp of creative ingenuity. Performing it is often described as a lifetime experience, and hearing it from the audience can feel equally transcendent. We’ll be performing this piece at Baroque pitch (in a lower key), accompanied by period instruments.
