With the help of many donors and in partnership with Johns Creek Beautification’s ArtSpot, the Leadership Johns Creek Class of 2020 #SeeTheCreek team brought the inspiring international female artist Kelsey Montague to paint an interactive, street art mural in Newtown Park. The mural is an exclusive piece for the City of Johns Creek and its design celebrates the city’s rich diversity and inclusiveness. The artist, Kelsey Montague, launched the #WHATLIFTSYOU movement. Her ability to harness the power of social media to create uplifting and interactive public art for the digital age has propelled her to a unique status among artists and social influencers. The goal was to welcome thousands of visitors to enjoy a different kind of street art installation, by actively becoming living works of art. Art naturally has the power to transform, educate, inspire and motivate.

What’s the Significance of the Images on the Chairs?
Thoughtful consideration was given to the design elements featured on each of the chairs in the mural. The #SeeTheCreek team members wanted to represent the things that they believed made the City of Johns Creek stand apart from other locations. The stories behind the distinctive and beautiful images include:

- Bridge Chair – The city is bordered on the east by the Chattahoochee River and many years ago, before the city was incorporated, there were six bridges crossing the river in addition to a number of ferries. Most of the bridges are no longer standing, but our existing bridges are an important link to our neighbors in the surrounding communities.
- Peach Chair – What is Georgia famously known as? The Peach State! As a largely agricultural state, Georgia is usually the top US producer of peanuts, broilers (chickens), pecans, blueberries and spring onions, but we are known as the Peach State because of Georgia’s reputation for producing the highest quality fruit. The peach became the official state fruit in 1995.
- Butterfly Chair – The tallest of the chairs was envisioned to represent Johns Creek’s cultural diversity and beautiful parks. Over 50 different languages are spoken in the city and we believe there is strength in celebrating our diversity! The city’s parks department takes care of 400+ acres of parkland and nature reserve, including five access points to the Chattahoochee River.
- Mortar Board Chair – Johns Creeks schools are among the best in the state and boast a 96% graduation rate! Of the four high schools, four middle schools and 11 elementary schools, four of them (Chattahoochee High, River Trail Middle, Dolvin Elementary and State Bridge Crossing Elementary) have been recipients of the US Department of Education’s highest honor, the Blue-Ribbon National School of Excellence.
- Globe Chair – This chair represents our global community spreading love and acceptance! With a large special needs community, this chair was designed to be lower in height to accommodate and allow those in wheelchairs to experience inclusion.
- Daffodil Chair – One of the major projects of Johns Creek Beautification (JCB) is to become a daffodil city. Each year thousands of daffodils are planted at various locations throughout the city under the auspices of the Daffodils4Hope (D4H) project. D4H has partnered with CanCare Atlanta to support cancer survivors. As a tribute to our veterans, Daffodils are planted in Veterans Memorial Walk. It is a long-term goal of D4H is to plant one daffodil for each of the 58,000 names on The Wall That Heals (Vietnam Veterans Memorial). Both these areas are located in Newtown Park.
- Butterfly Wings – The petite set of black and white butterfly wings are designed to accommodate both children and fur babies!

Meet The Artist
|
Kelsey Montague is the inspiring international female street artist/author behind the #WHATLIFTSYOU movement. Her ability to harnesses the power of social media to create uplifting and interactive public art for the digital age has propelled her to a unique status among artists and social influencers.
Her murals invite people into the piece itself and encourage them to share their experience online in a way that inspires others. After studying art in Florence, and graduating from Richmond University in London with a degree in Art, Design & Media, Kelsey spent four years in New York City, embracing and battling the Big Apple while developing her pen & ink style. She currently has two coloring books for adults: “What Lifts You” is available now, and “What Lifts Your Heart” releases in October 2016. Both are published by Harlequin Books (now part of Harper Collins).
