Gifts in Memory/in Honor of Another
Making a tribute gift to the Vergennes Opera House is a thoughtful way to honor the memory of a loved one or important friend. Such a gift stands as a testament that will endure the passage of time. Tribute gifts have a direct impact on our capacity to sustain our programming and maintain this historic landmark facility.
Tribute gifts will be recognized on the Donor Wall in the lobby of the Opera House and in our Annual Report, presenting both the name of the donor and that of the individual being remembered.
Giving All or Part of an Individual Retirement Account (IRA)
Generally, a withdrawal from an IRA is taxable. But if all or part of an IRA is paid directly from the IRA to Friends of Vergennes Opera House, no tax liability is incurred. Also, as a donor, if you are at the age where Required Minimum Distributions are in effect, a rollover to the Vergennes Opera House can satisfy all or part of the required RMD amount. The Friends of Vergennes Opera House is a recognized IRS 501(c) (3) organization, Federal ID# 03-0341456.
Gifts of Stock
Making a gift of long-term appreciated securities or mutual funds to Friends of Vergennes Opera House may be desirable for some. In addition, the gift allows you to itemize deductions to take a tax deduction equal to the fair market value of the securities. It is important to NOT sell the securities and then gift the proceeds but to transfer the securities to the Friends of Vergennes Opera House. There are frequently considerable tax advantages when donating appreciated stocks, other assets, etc. Consulting with your tax advisor is recommended. The 1897 Society
Named for the year in which the Vergennes Opera House was constructed, The 1897 Society was established to recognize and honor those individuals who have provided for Vergennes Opera House through planned gifts. Examples of planned gifts include charitable bequests through wills, trusts, etc., usually realized after a donor has passed. Membership in The 1897 Society is extended to those who have notified the FVOH of their intent and have arranged for a planned gift through their estate planning, and those from whom a planned gift has been received. It is the members of The 1897 Society who will make the greatest contribution to the enduring life of the Vergennes Opera House. Through their selflessness and generosity, their legacies will stand as cornerstones for the future well being of the Opera House.
