The Body Project is a group-based intervention that provides a forum for high school girls and college aged women to confront unrealistic appearance ideals and develop healthy body image and self-esteem. It has repeatedly been shown to effectively reduce body dissatisfaction, negative mood, unhealthy dieting and disordered eating.
Backed by two decades of research and evaluation data and piloted in NYC. The Body Project was developed by researchers at Stanford University, the University of Texas at Austin, and Oregon Research Institute, and has been delivered to over one million young women around the world. Rochester is one region in the upstate area that has trainers who can prepare facilitators to deliver this scripted program.
The conceptual basis for the Body Project is that if girls and young women voluntarily argue against the societal appearance-ideal, this will result in a reduced subscription to this ideal and to consequent decreases in eating disorder risk factors and eating disordered behaviors. The format is 6 forty-five minute sessions over 6 weeks using discussion and verbal, written, and behavioral exercises to reinforce concepts presented.
*Not for individuals with an active eating disorder.
WHAT ARE THE OBJECTIVES OF THE BODY PROJECT?
All participants are expected to engage in each session and complete all assignments. This program is voluntary and all sections must be completed to have the most impact.
If modifications are made to the structure outcomes will be impacted. These are incredibly important conversations that challenge the participants to think critically and examine their own behaviors.
