Culture & Packing Recommendations
Cultural Tips & Etiquette 1. Warm & Respectful Greetings – Handshakes are common, often with a warm smile and sometimes a slight bow as a sign of respect. Elders should always be greeted first. 2. Dress Modestly & Respectfully – While major cities are modern, conservative dress is appreciated, especially in rural areas and religious settings. 3. Hospitality is Big! – Expect to be offered food or drinks as a sign of welcome. It’s polite to accept, even if just a small amount. 4. Be Patient & Flexible – Things may not always run on Western schedules; embrace "Africa time" with a relaxed mindset. 5. Photography Etiquette – Always ask before taking photos of people or government buildings. 6. Faith is Central – Christianity is a strong part of life in both countries, so expressions of faith are welcomed. 7. Bargaining is Normal – In local markets, haggling is expected, so don’t be afraid to negotiate respectfully. 8. Use Your Right Hand – Whether giving money, eating, or greeting, the right hand is traditionally preferred. Packing List Essentials: ✔ Passport & Visa – Check entry requirements for Cameroon & Rwanda. ✔ Yellow Fever Vaccination Card – Required for entry. ✔ Travel Insurance – Recommended for health and trip coverage. ✔ Cash & Cards – Credit cards work in the major city ATMs, so withdrawing cash from ATM is convenient and safe, but bring some USD which can be exchanged locally. ✔ Unlocked Phone &SIM Card – We will help you get a local SIM which offers affordable calls and internet access (if your phone is unlocked). You can also use WhatsApp to make free calls to the U.S. with others who have the app. Clothing: ✔ Lightweight, breathable clothes – It’s warm and humid in Cameroon, while Rwanda is cooler, especially in the evenings. ✔ Long skirts or pants for cultural sensitivity – Especially for visits to rural areas or churches. ✔ A light jacket or sweater – For Rwanda’s cooler nights. ✔ Comfortable walking shoes – Essential for city tours and rural excursions. ✔ Sandals or flip-flops – For casual wear. Toiletries & Health: ✔ Sunscreen & Sunglasses – The sun can be intense. ✔ Bug Spray (with DEET) – Protect against mosquitoes. ✔ Hand Sanitizer & Wet Wipes – Not all restrooms have soap. ✔ Basic Medications – Pain relievers, stomach medicine (for unexpected food reactions), anti-malaria pills, and any personal prescriptions. Extras: ✔ Small Backpack or Daypack – Handy for daily outings. ✔ Refillable Water Bottle – Staying hydrated is key! ✔ Journal or Notebook – To capture reflections from the trip. ✔ Power Bank & Plug Adapter – Cameroon uses Type E/C plugs; Rwanda uses Type J/C. ✔ Small Gifts – Consider bringing small tokens of appreciation for hosts, such as notebooks, pens, or local souvenirs from your home country.
