MYTH:We either keep mayoral control or go back to the dark days of books being stuck in the warehouse and paychecks that don’t go out on time. REALITY: This is a false choice. There are many specific ways to restore democracy to our education system. A State Board of Education can be given many specific powers to confirm mayoral appointees, serve as a check and balance on other DC education agencies, conduct oversight, be a conduit for community voice and much more – without having micromanagement powers over the day to day functioning of schools as other school boards have. Our teacher leaders will be laying out several models for what this might look like.
