The concept for the Queer Artists Project came from former Lambda Archives volunteer Susan Richards. Susan, a loyal volunteer for Lambda Archives for years, officially founded the project which was designed to uplift and highlight local Queer artists. The opening exhibition was originally held at Lambda Archives in 2013. This living project is something we continually add to and occasionally pull from to host community events. If you are a Queer artist in San Diego, Northern Baja California, or Imperial Valley region that would like to be showcased through this project, please email us at [email protected]
Susan and Lane Richards on the AIDS: Fear, Rage, Hope Exhibit
Blade-Citizen, October 6, 1991
“For those of us bereaved, the show offered a sense of not being along in our grief. That was part of the power of the show, the sense that we’re all connected. No one is untouched by AIDS, really.” - Susan Richards
“After this show closes, it is my wish that this piece of art be burned, and the ashes flushed down a public toilet: just as our lives are being burned away and after we die, the memory of us will no doubt be flushed from existence.” - Lane Richards
