There he was. The individual who would change my life. The one who would alter my destination in untold ways.
The one who would save my life - in response to saving his....
Riding with a friend, I commented on the most wonderful pony I had ever seen. Her shocked expression should have told me there was more to my observation.
There was...
I am nearsighted and did not ride in my glasses, hence not noticing the 'pony' was a 'horse' or that he was emaciated - very spooky - missing much of the hair on his back.
A week later I accepted a job offer at that same stable as head trainer and instructor. Excitedly I inquired if I would train the bay pony. They did not have a bay pony.
Instead, out came a terribly narrow, wide-eyed horse with a head so high he looked far beyond his natural height.
Almost uncontrollable as he was led to his stall, it was muttered I could 'try to do something with this one.'
I knew this animal's fear. I knew his loneliness. I immediately knew his heart.
I could not imagine a minute of life - without him.
What we went through after that is a story in itself, but when my vet said the horse's pneumonia would most likely be fatal and that there was nothing more he could do;
I was left with medicine and a promise he would die....... he did…
over 28 years later.
Amik.
He could not have been more perfect for me than if he was cut from my very soul....
Not only did we share a lifelong jumping career, but in between all the competitions, students and accolades, one by one I began to help animals re-define their lives as Amik re-defined mine that early winter day, so many years ago.
It is in his honor we build the dream of Equestrian Spirits every day.
As a 501(c)(3) animal sanctuary, our residents have a promise. A promise I whispered to Amik the day he became mine. I promised he would have the most wonderful life I could provide; whatever came our way. Instead he provided me a life I once thought was not worth living.
All our species; whatever their tales, are allowed to find their own path; to make of their life what is meaningful to each of them.
Feel free to join us in our quest for sharing the safety, comfort and joy, for all animals.
