Message from WSCPA President - Mark Solomon
Dear Members and Friends –
We hope you had a great Thanksgiving Holiday. As we approach the end of 2024, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on what we’ve been able to accomplish together this past year. We will then highlight what we have in store for you in 2025.
Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Training:
We were able to hold two CPTED certification trainings, one in Spokane in April and one in Renton in May. The Renton training was specifically for key management staff for the City of Renton. Renton’s Mayor has made incorporating CPTED into City thinking and planning a priority. I feel we may have the opportunity to do additional training with them and want to make that opportunity open to other municipalities.
Crime Prevention Thursday
We held nine Crime Prevention Thursday Sessions. Subjects ranged from presentations from the National Insurance Crime Bureau, the Drug Enforcement Agency’s Community Engagement Program, Project iGuardian, a discussion on Swatting hoaxes and appropriate responses, as well as our periodic check in with our Crime Prevention and Community Engagement Specialists from around the state. The sessions that were recorded (not all were, depending on subject matter) are available for viewing via the Members Only section on our website. Additionally, we were joined by partners from other states, including Michigan and Oregon.
Annual Crime Prevention Conference
We had a successful statewide in-person Crime Prevention Conference in Wenatchee in September. We were fortunate to have both Tessa Gorman, US Attorney for Western Washington, and Vanessa Waldref, US Attorney for Eastern Washington, as our Keynote speakers. The focus of our conference was to provide information on programs and plans that you can take back and implement in your communities. Based on the feedback we received from those of you who attended, we will continue this focus at future conferences.
Online Implicit Bias Training
We continue to offer online our “Identifying and Adapting Your Bias” Training on our Moodle training platform. We want to give a special acknowledgement to WSCPA member Jim Baylor, who teaches at Clover Park Technical College, for encouraging his students to take this training. To date, over 100 Clover Park students have successfully completed this course.
Before we delve into our plans for 2025, I want to give a special shout out to a community engagement event and some training opportunities.
Renton Police Department’s Battle of the Badges
Renton PD will be holding their annual Battle of the Badges event on December 14th, 2024, at Renton Technical College. As of this writing, over 30 agencies and departments have registered to participate. For those who haven’t seen the video about this event, you can watch it here. Check out City of Renton’s webpage here for more information, or contact our colleague Stephanie Hynes here.
Free DHS CP3 Trainings
Additionally, we wanted to remind you of free training offered through the Department of Homeland Security’s Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships (CP3). There is the three-hour Threat Evaluation and Reporting Overview (TERO), which is an introductory training focusing on a behavioral approach to violence prevention. Secondly there is the one-day Basic Threat Evaluation and Reporting Course (B-TERC) that teaches participants how to help assist in preventing acts of targeted violence, such as, but not limited to, terrorism, school shootings, or mass attacks in public spaces by identifying those threats or observable behaviors that may indicate the potential for violence. Finally, there is the three-day Threat Evaluation and Reporting Course (TERC), which trains federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial (F/SLTT) homeland security partners on applying behavioral threat assessment approaches, as it relates to tips and leads, to prevent targeted violence in their areas of responsibility. WSCPA is partnering with DHS CP3 to spread the word about these free trainings. For more information about these trainings, or if you have interest in hosting a training, please reach out to our colleague, Salliejo Evers of DHS CP3 here.
Looking forward to 2025, here’s what we have on tap for you.
40-Hour Basic Crime Prevention Certification Course
We will be holding our next 40-hour Basic Crime Prevention Certification Course February 24-28, 2025. We will be hosted by the Snohomish County Sherrif’s Office at their North Precinct in Marysville, WA. The registration link for this training is live. Please share with those inside your agency (or with another agency) that would like to - or need to - receive this training. To register for this training, please go here.
CPTED Certification Course
We will be holding our next Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Certification Course May 13-15, 2025. We will be hosted by the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries at their Tumwater, WA campus. Upon completion of this training, you will be certified by the Washington State Crime Prevention Association as a CPTED-Trained Professional. Registration is live and you can register for this training here.
Annual Crime Prevention Conference
Our 47th Annual Crime Prevention Conference will be September 16-18, 2025, at the Heathman Lodge in Vancouver, WA. While our 2024 conference has recently concluded, we are already planning our 2025 conference. A conference committee has been identified and will be meeting virtually in the next few weeks. If you are interested in shaping the next conference, please reach out to us directly so we can include you in the planning.
Crime Prevention Thursdays
In an effort to bring to you information about technology that may benefit your communities, we will occasionally hear from companies in the safety and security industry. To this end, our January and February Crime Prevention Thursday sessions will feature representatives from two companies in the security field.
Our next Crime Prevention Thursday will be January 16th, 2025, at 11am via Zoom. Please join us to learn about HiveWatch. HiveWatch is an end-to-end Security Operations Management Platform built for corporate physical security teams to enhance their existing security technologies. HiveWatch was created to solve some of the industry's biggest challenges with features such as false alarm reduction, tailgate detection, local emergency services dispatch, and device health monitoring. Users are also able to store critical information and assets such as SOPs, site snapshots, and facilities/floor plans. Scott Callens from HiveWatch will present this information. To register for this session, please go here.
Our February Crime Prevention Thursday session will be February 20th, 2025, at 11am via Zoom. Please join us to learn about Verkada. Verkada is a cloud-based, natively integrated physical security that delivers intuitive systems for end users to easily manage facility and community security and quickly respond to events - as well as stopping events as they occur with alarms and proactive security systems. Clay Cooledge from Verkada will present this information. To register for this session, please go here.
We are actively seeking topics for future Crime Prevention Thursday sessions, including such topics as Fraud and Identity Theft, and using Crime Analysis to inform and support your Crime Prevention and Community Engagement Strategies. If there is a particular topic you would like to have covered, or a topic you yourself would like to present, reach out to us directly and we’ll get you scheduled.
Online Implicit Bias Training
We will continue to offer online our “Identifying and Adapting Your Bias” Training on our Moodle training platform. If you or someone you know have interest in this training, please send an email to [email protected].
Dues Reminder
I would be remiss if I didn’t give you a reminder about membership dues. Our Association relies on membership dues to keep our operation running. Please renew your individual or agency memberships dues so there is no lapse in your benefits. You can renew (or join!) here. Your renewal or new membership will carry through the 2025 calendar year.
Thank you all and thank you for all you do for your communities. We hope you have a wonderful holiday season, however you celebrate. Be Well and Stay Safe!
