Official Certification Requirements

Certified Associate Ergonomist

Is the CAE Right for You?

The Oxford Research Institute offers several certification options. To find out which is right for you, please view the official certification requirements section of the step-by-step guide.

What You'll Need:

  • A completed application
  • Processing fee of $495
  • Documents listed below

Your Resume

Two copies of a detailed resume that documents 1+ years experience and at least a BS/BA degree in an ergonomic or human factors related field, and detail professional education, training and experience.

Related fields may include PT, OT, IE, H&S, IH, Biomechanics, Performance Physiology, HFE, Safety, Loss Control, Ergonomics, Health and other degrees.

Education + Training

Complete transcripts showing at least a BS/BA degree in an ergonomic or human factors related field.

As well as -

Evidence of specialized training or formal education in fields directly or closely related with ergonomics (seminars, workshops, lectures).

Work + Experience

One letter of recommendation from a sponsor who has known the applicant for at least three years. For the CAE, the sponsor does not have to be an ergonomist but may be an employer, professor, or work associate.

(Required) one work sample if available. The CAE requires a work sample.

Finally you may follow this link (opens in a new tab) to submit your documents, application, a cover letter and $495 processing fee.

CEU documentation must be sent to [email protected].

After your application has been approved, you may schedule to sit for the exam. You must score 70% or higher on the CAE exam in order to become certified.

Staying Certified

In subsequent years, certificate holders must:
  • Comply with a Code of Conduct.
  • Obtain one CEU every year to demonstrate continued education and training in either Human Factors Engineering or Ergonomics.
  • Submit the annual renewal fee.

Upgrade Option

The CAE credential may be upgraded to that of the CIE when all of the requirements for the CIE designation have been met and a petition has been filed with the Oxford Research Institute. The fee for a change in status from CAE to CIE is $350 after all CIE criteria have been met.
