Official Certification Requirements

Certified Human Factors Engineering Professional

Is the CHFEP Right for You?

The Oxford Research Institute offers several certification options. To find out which is right for you, please view the official certification requirements section of the step-by-step guide.

What You'll Need:

  • A completed application
  • Processing fee of $495
  • Documents listed below

Your Resume

Two copies of a detailed resume that documents either:
  1. 5+ continuous years of experience AND a Master’s degree
  2. 3+ continuous years of experience AND a Ph.D.

Your degree must be in Human Factors Engineering, Engineering Psychology or related field or as a technical services provider of Human Factors Engineering or Engineering Psychology. 

Note: A Master's degree is required for the CIE and CHFEP credential. Some exceptions to these requirements may be made on a case by case basis. For example, if a person has over 25 years experience in this field but does not have an appropriate degree.

Education + Training

Complete transcripts showing a Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in fields directly or closely related with Human Factors Engineering or Engineering Psychology.

As well as -

Evidence of specialized training or formal education in fields directly or closely related with ergonomics.

Work + Experience

Duplicate copies of 2-3 work samples or technical contributions to any of the above fields which demonstrate competence in Human Factors Engineering or Engineering Psychology and statistical measurement techniques.

Two letters of recommendation (with names and contact numbers) from professional sponsors of the applicant who are familiar with their work in the field to which they’re applying.

CEU documentation must be sent to [email protected].

After your application has been approved, you may schedule to sit for an exam. In order to become certified, you must score 85% or higher on the CHFEP exam.

Staying Certified

In subsequent years, certificate holders must:
  • Comply with a Code of Conduct.
  • Obtain one CEU every year to demonstrate continued education and training in either Human Factors Engineering or Ergonomics.
  • Submit the annual renewal fee.
