The Value of Vets to Conservation
Wildlife Veterinarians play a vital role in African wildlife conservation. Conservation includes a wide variety of interventions, including land and water protection and restoration, "smart" development, control of invasive species, pollution prevention and remediation, management of harvest (including of poaching) and preventing the proliferation of diseases and parasites. It also necessitates monitoring of animal populations. For conservation to be successful it's important for conservation teams to also have a robust understanding of some individual animals' health and welfare as a representation of what may be happening within an entire population. In a region, such as Africa, where many species have experienced dramatic declines and, therefore, have low populations, every individual animal counts. Through places like wildlife sanctuaries, wildlife veterinarians rescue, treat, rehabilitate, study and re-wild individual animals (when possible). They also support monitoring operations by, for instance, ensuring monitoring devices used on individual animals don't harm or overstress them.
