THE RIB TRIBE
Orlando Signal - A respite from media chaos.

“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” - Frederick Douglas
"Prevent domestic violence—a crime and an ACE—all in one place."
In honor of Yolanda Kelly, whose life was tragically taken by her partner, we dedicate this program. Her mother, our friend Carmita Kelly, knows that such tragedies can be prevented by addressing unhealed adverse childhood experiences. As we gather to remember Yolanda, we come together with a shared commitment to ensure that it never goes too far again.

Echoes of the Past
In the quiet shadows of a child’s room,
Words whispered like sharp shards of glass,
Carving doubts deep into tender skin,
Etching “unworthy” where love should have been.
Each syllable, a blow unseen,
Building walls around a fragile dream,
Turning the innocent heart to stone,
Where warmth and self-worth should have grown.
ACE’s tally up, a silent score,
Of wounds inflicted behind closed doors,
A childhood marred by cruel refrain,
Leaves the soul aching with a nameless pain.
They grow, searching, reaching wide,
For love’s embrace, for a place to hide,
But find in lovers’ arms the same old song,
A dance with demons, where they don’t belong.
Narcissists see the cracks, the gaps,
In hearts conditioned to accept the scraps,
And so the cycle spins, again and again,
Where hurt begets hurt, and pain begets pain.
Oh, how those early words did twist,
Creating victims who still exist,
In the dark, in silence, in fear they lie,
Wondering why they’re the ones left to cry.
But the echoes of the past can fade,
With hands that heal and voices that persuade,
That worth is not in words of old,
But in the strength of breaking the mold.
So rise, dear one, from shadows deep,
Let no abuser’s promise keep
You chained to the wounds of yesterday,
For in your heart, true love can stay.

Significant Issue: Domestic violence remains a major concern in Orlando, with thousands of cases reported annually.
Alarming Trend: Recent data shows a troubling rise in both the number of incidents and the severity of domestic violence cases in the city. Tragic Losses: The increase in domestic violence-related deaths, such as the tragic case of Capucine Carson, underscores the urgency of addressing this issue. Broader Impact: These incidents are part of a larger national trend, exacerbated by factors like generational exposure to Adverse Childhood Experiences, economic stress, social isolation, and limited access to support services. Immediate Need: The rise in fatalities emphasizes the need for enhanced prevention measures and support for victims to save lives and break the cycle of abuse. Reported Crimes: In 2020, there were 106,515 reported cases of domestic violence in Florida, resulting in 63,217 arrests. Shelter and Advocacy Services: During the fiscal year 2020-21, Florida's domestic violence centers provided 412,360 nights of emergency shelter to 10,287 survivors and their children. Additionally, 191,451 hours of advocacy and counseling services were offered, with advocates creating 150,799 tailored safety plans. Hotline Calls: Florida’s domestic violence hotlines received 72,321 calls from individuals seeking emergency services, information, and safety planning assistance. National Context: Nationally, over 10 million adults experience domestic violence each year in the United States. About 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men face sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime, often leading to significant impacts such as PTSD or the need for victim services. |
