My intentions in fostering were to stand in the gap. I want to show everyone, the children included, how the “system” should work. You should have a foster parent who is in agreement with what’s in the best interest of the children AND realize that the judge makes that determination, not you. My job was to care, support, love, and advocate for these children while they were in my care. For the majority of the case reunification was the goal, then kinship adoption. I fully supported both. I voiced my opinions when asked. I reported what I was told or what I saw that didn’t align with their best interests during visits or at home so the team could look further into it. I attended each hearing. It got to the point where the Judge would ask for updates from all the legal parties, then ask me for an update, too! I was honored and terrified at the same time! But I always maintained my role of “standing in the gap.”
