UPDATE: January 10, 2025
"Hello to all my friends at Sweet Relief;
I hope the New Year of 2025 has been good to you. Our thoughts and prayers go out to friends in North Carolina, still dealing with their December storm, the unthinkable tragedy of New Orleans, and now so many of our industry friends dealing with the fires of California.
Drawing from my own experience their faith will get them through. However, we cannot forget how dark their days much seem, we just need to let them know we are here for them. Reach out, just to listen, I’m sure they are hurting.
Myself, I am slowly getting better. Like I stated in the last update, Days & dates are funny to try and remember. I still have my wits about me, but slowly I have lost some of my left finger usage, and I’m certainly not chasing anyone through the parking lots on the next tour.
I had the FULL MRI checkup the other day. The stroke area itself has grown a bit, and my neurologist says we’ll monitor its progress throughout out the coming weeks, But overall, still thankful to be here.
The staff and friends at Sweet Relief, what can you say about these gentle souls. Just always there to reach out and help. Truly a gift to humanity…..
We were certainly blessed spending a quiet holiday together. Here are my precious pumpkins. Lilah to the Left, Ellie To The Right.

UPDATE: December 23rd, 2024
"Good day to all my friends at Sweet Relief,
I hope this finds everyone, healthy, happy and basking in the holiday glow. I apologize that my update has taken so long to compose. I had always believed that everyone will have a “Jimmy Stewart” moment in their lives. All of you have certainly given me a thousand of those moments. I truly do have a wonderful life. First, let me give you an update. I am doing well. I have had some setbacks, but so many people have rallied around me that I can only gather strength from them. I have some small memory issues, mainly days and dates. There are times the balance goes a little wacky, but as you can see YOU do learn to "adapt”. It’s natural for someone from Philadelphia to speak fast, though my speech is a little affected, so it has slowed my “Philly” down some. Where do I begin to thank all of you? |
The doctors say I am a miracle. The chances of having a stroke in the ER of a “stroke center” cannot be calculated. I feel good, and I certainly am taking much better care of myself. They have given me copies of my MRI, that show me what has happened. I ask all of you to please, please reduce the stress in your life.
I have been a fan of Winston Churchill my entire life, and I promise to all of you that I will always live this quote
“I shall go onto the end whatever the cost may be….I will never surrender"
Enjoy every day.
And an enormous thanks to Aric, Brittani and everyone at Sweet Relief!
Cheers,
Langenstein”

John Langenstein has been a vital part of the music industry since 1987, traveling the world on rock tours with iconic acts like Jackson Browne, Phish, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
This year, however, John has faced significant health challenges, suffering multiple seizures and two strokes, which have left him hospitalized and unable to work. His recovery may be a long road, but he remains hopeful about returning to his passion next year. In the meantime, we ask for your support through donations to help cover John's medical bills, rent, and other vital living expenses as he focuses on healing. Donate Now |
A letter from John...
To My Friends at Sweet Relief,
Good day, my name is John Langenstein. I am 65 years old and have been traveling on rock tours since 1987. I have had the honor of being with Jackson Browne (37 years), Phish (18 years). Crosby, Stills & Nash for (7 years).
I also have had the honor of taking Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young on their two (2) world reunion tours.

I have done many of the festivals currently in the United States. I helped design Bonnaroo, I was security director for all of the 10 Phish Festivals. I’ve done Boston Calling for the past 6 years. Several years’ worth of Atlantic City Beach Concerts. Tortuga, Hangout, Electric Forest and Hulaween.
In 2015, I was The Director of Event Security for The Papal Visit in the United States. I spent 3 weeks traveling with the Holy Father. On July 10th of this year, I suffered several seizures with two strokes. One which was minor occurred at home, but the second stroke happened in the Abington Hospital ER. I was hospitalized for 10 days, learning the basics, as I recovered. The three fingers on my left hand have gone dull. I do have some trouble walking long distances, I do use a cane to assist me when needed during those walks. My speech is slightly affected. Being from Philadelphia our dialect is a fast speech. I have noticed mine has slowed down considerably. Remembering dates and days has become somewhat troublesome but is improving as the months go on. I hope to return to work in late January 2025, and work most of the main festivals, through the spring and summer. |
During my recovery, I have not been able to work, which resulted in loss of income and the reason for my writing this letter to you.
I want to take the time to THANK YOU for assisting us in any way you can. My bride, Joy, has battled cancer for three (3) years now. She’s in remission but unfortunately now will need a possible knee replacement surgery in the future, along with a possible carpal tunnel operation. I’m recovering from my stroke thankfully with minimal physical effects. I also will have a hand surgery schedule for some time in December. Again, my utmost thanks to you for me and my family in hope to get back to health and on our feet again. Most sincerely, John Langenstein |
