A Mentee is Inspired to Be a Mentor and Names a Scholarship After Her Mentor!

Ke’Asia Edwards applied for another scholarship through our organization and instead, inspired a group of donors to come together to create a scholarship just for her! They were impressed by her work with youth at the local Boys & Girls Club, and the Zeta Phi Beta Archonette Club and March of Dimes as a volunteer. They were moved by her love for history and her vision to change the future for youth. And Johnelka Stafford, the main sponsor, decided the scholarship would be named after one of her mentors, Yevola S. Peters.

“O​ne of the main reasons I was able to achieve an MBA as a first-­generation-­to-­college student was because of the support I received from my mentor, Yevola S. Peters.​ When I met Ke’Asia, I knew I had to find a way to help her financially and with my own experience. Although I know I’ll never be able to repay Mrs. Peters for her countless words of wisdom and constant encouragement, I pray my efforts to pay it forward, starting with Ke’Asia, will show her I’ve been listening, “ explained Ms. Stafford.

Yevola Peters is known throughout Annapolis and Anne Arundel County for her work as an educator and advocate for individuals and families with the Community Action Agency, Anne Arundel County government and St. Philip’s Episcopal Church’s Family Life Center. She has been honored as a recipient of various service awards and she even has a street in Annapolis named for her.

Ke’Asia will be attending Hampton University in Virginia in the fall to major in African American studies. Her grandfather has been influential in her education and encouraged her since she was a small child to study history. Ke’Asia will be the first in her family to complete a college degree.​
