Challenges of Learning to Prioritize and Network

Majoring in mathematics can be quite a challenge according to Bowie State University Junior, Wayland Mullins.  He is also enrolled in ROTC and begins his days commuting from Baltimore for P/T workouts at 6:30 a.m.

"I am taking a lot of STEM classes, some of which are five credits.  It is a very challenging program compared to other majors and balancing that with ROTC can be a bit overwhelming," says Wayland.

For Wayland, joining a fraternity has helped a great deal with networking and building a support system.  

"I get to meet a lot of fraternity brothers here and at other schools. I have met guys that have graduated and are in careers I want.  I enjoy listening to their helpful hints, stories of mistakes and try to learn from their experiences."

Wayland's challenges of time management and peer pressure are also part of the experience.  But most on his mind is how to build his resume while he is in college.  

"It is difficult to find jobs that are related to your major when you are in college.  I need to make my resume strong so I can line up a job when I graduate."

This past summer, he was in Fort Knox, KY at a Leaders Training course for ROTC. He is hoping to do some holiday retail work over the break but once he returns will feel the pressure to find a summer internship or work cooperative program where he can gain credits while working.  He especially wants to make sure he has these opportunities in his senior year.

Sounds like he is exactly where he needs to be.  We are proud of you, Wayland!
