For a few days over Thanksgiving break, Towson Senior and Annapolis Trust scholar, Terrance Brownlee will use his time to look for a job for winter break, get schoolwork done, investigate LSAT testing and follow up some leads in his career exploration. 

This semester has been extremely busy carrying 18 credits and focusing on his Political Science major. Classes in civic engagement, foreign policy, public administration, homeland security, urban policy and international studies are fueling his growing passion for politics and public policy.

His summer internship also added to his career vision. The Anne Arundel County’s County Executive’s office gave him real experience for a career in the political arena. When he wasn’t rewriting bills or filing (he did a lot of filing), Terrance attended public events with County Executive Steve Schuh including the ribbon cutting ceremony at the Millersville Steak and Shake and the French ship Hermione in Annapolis.

“The County Executive’s office set it up so I could get a feel for every aspect of government,” explains Terrance. “I rotated every two weeks to a new office within the County government. I was so honored to work with all the people I did. Everyone was very welcoming and helpful.”

Terrance most enjoyed working in the Office of Law. Although he always has been interested in Criminal Law, he soaked up being a part of the “other side” and sitting in on County cases.

The Annapolis Trust student sat with the lawyers in the courtroom on well-publicized cases such as the Millersville party house. He was included in the strategic discussion and the sideline jokes that they would never get to attend one of the infamous parties.

In Planning and Zoning he was “amazed at the process” of planning and budgeting the new county schools. Terrance worked on data collection tasks for the office of Community and Constituent Services. In Parks & Recreation, he learned how involved the responsibilities are in managing the county programs and lands.

These career exploration experiences not only grow Terrance's resume but give him a network that will align him for success upon graduation in May, 2016. Our Anne Arundel County Exec now knows what we already did – this young man is destined for greatness – and we are proud he will join our growing network of Annapolis Trust alumnae.

Update as of December, 2013

Terrance Brownlee is settled in at Towson since transferring from University of Charleston in West Virginia, pulling a 3.3 GPA and playing football in what he says is almost like a full time job.
 
As a sophomore, he has learned a bit about being homesick and time management.  Terrance appreciates that home is now not as far away as it was when he was in West Virginia.  He also understands the commitment of school and football and is clear there is not much room for anything else. 
 
As he puts it, “You can’t mix partying with school and football.”
 
Terrance is studying Political Science with a specialty in Criminal Justice and has had a lifelong dream to work for the FBI.  After a summer interning at the county Circuit Court, Terrance also is thinks about law school.  Although his other lifelong dream is to play in the NFL, the former high school state champ linebacker realizes it is very competitive.
 
When discussing the new model for the Annapolis Trust, which includes vocational exploration, pre-college prep, mentoring and career networking, Terrance is excited about how it will help youth. 
 
“It’s your mindset and vision.  Just asking a teen what do you want to be when you grow up – is so important.  A lot of kids don’t know the steps to be a doctor and this will really help.” 
 
He added, “I took a class last year about how to start your own business.  You have to have a vision, you have to be determined and have connections.  A business plan is like a life plan.”

Sounds like Terrance's life plan is off to a great start.
