Marianne N.
Hello, my name is Marianne. I have a passion for computational biology and aspire to one day have a career with the Department of Defense at Fort Detrick, contributing to their mission of improving bioinformatic processes through groundbreaking research and discovery. I will put the skills and knowledge acquired through my college education and internships to good use. I envision myself in a role where I can conduct scientific research and develop algorithms and software for the U.S. Army so they can effectively analyze biological datasets and strengthen the world’s protection and awareness of infectious and dangerous diseases. Although often overlooked, I believe such a role in bioinformatics research can provide valuable insights and information.
Outside of academics, I am engaged in a variety of extracurricular activities. My most favorite are working as a near-peer mentor for the Army Educational Outreach Program and interning at the National Institutes of Standards and Technology (NIST) to develop and refine a web application that scientists will use to determine safe dosages for vaccines and medicine delivery. Also, I enjoy working on my self-improvement and spending quality time with loved ones. By dedicating days to self-care, journaling my thoughts and goals, maintaining a clean environment, and engaging in positive, relaxing hobbies such as listening to music and constructing trinkets with my 3D pen, I have become a content and driven individual, determined to achieve both my personal and education goals.
Ditya J.
Hi, I’m Ditya. College is a new, exciting experience for me! My plan is to complete my major in Computer Science with a minor in pre-law. I believe this combination will help me be a cybersecurity professional who understands the legal implications in cybersecurity and software development. While I may not have a long list of prestigious awards, what I do have is a passion for working hard to achieve my goals, no matter how difficult that may be. I’m also quite disciplined! I have performed well in high school (top 15% of class), while serving as treasurer for our theatre company, drum major for our marching band, and section leader for our Honor Winds band. I have my 3rd degree black belt and love all forms of exercise. Looking ahead, while I see myself working full time in cybersecurity. I also hope to host basic karate classes or tutor younger kids in my free time during the weekdays or on the weekends and help my neighbors if they need dog sitting. These are all things I enjoy and want to carry with me into my adult years.
Adele B.
Hello, I’m Adele. I am blessed to have been accepted into my university’s Computer Science and Honors program. I’d like to use my degree in Computer Science to help with government research that will have a global impact. In high school I had the opportunity to work on two national programs, which I enjoyed so much I knew I wanted to make a career of it. The first project was with Los Alamos National Laboratory. I was on the team that updated their program that monitors ocean temperatures from Fortran to Python, which improved the usability of information and the energy required to transmit data. The second project was working with researchers at a local university. I wrote a program in R that was able to clean up the data from the USDA Soil Survey, helping the team to better understand survey results and make better recommendations on agricultural policies. One summer soon I hope to intern with the Department of Defense. I’m very excited about a program with the United States Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command in Warren, Michigan. It would be so amazing to write code for cutting-edge technology used for military vehicles. Whatever the future holds for me, it must be one that will require loads of creative coding. I want my coding to make a difference.
