Jessica Kovan, one of this retreat's students' most popular instructors, returns with a new challenge: Fully express yourself and your emotions in a 6-by-6 inch collage painting. Jessica can show you how, as demonstrated in the slideshow images above: All paintings there are between 4 by 4 and 6 by 6 inches. You'll go home with not just a painting or two but a full stack of personal messages to yourself and your admirers.
Classwork will be collage in mixed media. For extra fun, bring your favorite materials in addition to the items on the supply list. See more about Jessica and more of her own work at her website, www.jessicakovan.com. All levels of experience. Class limit is 12 students. |
Supply list
Gathering materials can almost be as much fun as the process of collage.
Brushes
Old or cheap brushes (including one at least 2” wide)
One good brush that can make nice clean strokes
Brayer
Hard rubber printmaking roller, any size
Paint:
Any acrylic paint in your favorite colors. You just need a handful of colors plus black and white.
Adhesives
Acrylic matte or gloss medium or acrylic gloss medium. I mix them.
You may also want a heavier glue such as Gel Medium.
6 or more substrates: 6" by 6" or smaller
Your choice: 140 lb. or 300 lb. watercolor paper
or stretched canvas
or hardboard panels
or cradled wood panels.
I will use 140 lb. watercolor paper and Cheap Joe’s ¾” unprimed cradled panels.
If you want to follow along specifically with my methods, bring at least 4 wood or hardboard panels – something that provides a rigid support. I like working in a square format, but feel free to bring rectangular panels. Just keep them small. You can find them at local art stores or online. If you want to work on canvas or watercolor paper, feel free.
Collage materials
Colored tissue paper, old paintings, old newspapers or magazines, old holiday cards, books, diaries, poetry, musical scores, rice paper, lace, paper doilies, old stamps, letters, receipts, maps, craft paper, postcards, etc. (As little or as much as you want.)
Basics
Paper towels, water container, scissors, pencil, pen, notebook, apron, palette
Ways to embellish and make marks
Stamps; stencils of your choice, expired credit card or gift card for scraping paint, old toothbrush for spattering paint. I love bringing things I can write on top of my painting (pastels, Inktense pencils, white pens, etc.). I will have lots to share so you can experiment!
The most important thing is to bring your sense of humor, adventure and play!
