T1D TO THE THIRD:
T1 KIDS HELPING & SUPPORTING T1 KIDS This talk will inspire you, and your kids, tweens and teens. It is all about finding support in the midst of a pandemic. T1D to the Third, is a group of 3, type 1 diabetics who met and realized how important keeping in touch was. They met at a conference before the pandemic, but decided as a final push that something needed to be done to get T1 kids together, at the start of the coronavirus pandemic: life with diabetes can already be isolating enough, and being stuck at home because of a pandemic only intensified it. Starting T1D To The Third has brought them so much happiness and light during these dark times, and we know that it has helped others work through these times as well. Info to get your kids access is available in the summit page below the talk, links too!
ABOUT t1D TO THE THIRDOur names are Adriana Richard, Natalie Brogan, and Sophie Rinzler, and in 2020 we started a group called T1D To The Third. T1D To The Third is a support group for type one diabetics around the world that forms connections that last a lifetime. Although we do touch on type one a lot, we are mostly focused on having a fun time, and through our Zoom calls, diabetics make friends and have fun in a group setting. The three of us met at JDRF’s Children's Congress 2019, and ever since then, we knew that we could work together to change the world.

Charles Mattocks: Diabetes Championwith Charles Mattocks - chef, actor, an author, filmmaker & diabetes advocate
Charles Mattocks’ life changed yet again in 2011, when he was diagnosed with diabetes. As many people can attest, being diagnosed with diabetes — or any chronic condition, for that matter — can be devastating. “I thought I was going to die,” shares Charles. “I know that may seem extreme, but I knew nothing about diabetes. I was just in shock, and I was scared.” Charles turned to Google to learn about diabetes. Why Google? Not surprisingly, his doctor didn’t give Charles any information or suggestions about his diabetes, nor was he referred to a diabetes educator or a dietitian to learn how to manage his condition. Yet he persevered and started reading up on everything diabetes to learn what he needed to do. And with his goal of helping others and spreading awareness always in the forefront, Charles decided to create a documentary, The Diabetic You, to chronicle his quest to learn about diabetes. Join us as we chat about both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and how you can change your mind, body and spirit to 'reverse' your fears about the disease to change your life and fate. Get to know Charles and how he is transforming how diabetes is perceived and managed. ABOUT CHARLES MATTOCKS He’s a chef, an actor, an author, a filmmaker, and a dad, he’s also a diabetes advocate. Charles has been drawing upon his own experience with having diabetes to help others. You might say that he’s a man on a mission. Music runs in his blood — his uncle is the late, great Bob Marley. After performing with rapper LL Cool J and even cutting his own single, and acting. Charles shifted his talents to acting, where he played the role of Ben Tyler in the Emmy-nominated 1996 movie The Summer of Ben Tyler. Then life get’s a bit more real, … he had a young son to support so he morphed his career yet again, this time with the focus on food. so he morphed his career yet again, this time with the focus on food. The Poor Chef launched with the aim to help people learn how to prepare healthy, tasty meals that didn’t break the bank. Charles was featured on the Today show, Martha Stewart, CNN and Dr. Oz. He started blogging for Dr. Oz’s show and even authored a cookbook, Eat Cheap but Eat Well. |

Carb Counting alone is not enough!with Dr. Jody Stanislaw - NMD, CDE
I recommended that a healthy diet should consist of at least 80 percent healthy, whole foods, which allows for occasional favored treats 20 percent or less of the time. Because this talk is shared with the masses, and frankly the average diet today is more like 80 percent processed and maybe 20 percent healthy, I proposed the 80/20 ratio because it’s a more realistic goal for most people to achieve.

My T1D is never going to hold me back again, and don't let it hold you back either!with Garrit Pillie, Adventurer and Engineer
When I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, I was in my early 20s. At first, I refused to accept I would need to use insulin. I tried running miles every day and avoiding carbs entirely to manage. My levels were still way too high, and I was a downright skeleton. My boss ended up taking me on a tour of a kidney treatment dialysis center and mentioned that this could be my future if I don’t face reality. What a wake-up call. I then discovered the Omnipod system and that has been a huge help in managing my levels when I’m having a blast doing everything I want to do such as downhill mountain biking, rock climbing, skiing and snowboarding. I was also honored and humbled to recently reach third degree level black belt in Iaido after training for nearly 10 years. Life is good!
ABOUT GARRIT PILLIE Garrit is a Director of Engineering in commercial real estate. He received his Bachelor of Science in Business Management from the University of Washington, where he graduated cum laude. They enjoy many adventures living aboard their boat, which allows them to explore the jewels of the Pacific Northwest, including the San Juan and Gulf Islands. |
