Ilana Bergen
It can take a village: Raising teens with Type 1 Who says that two is better than 1? Well, when her second child was diagnosed with T1, she heard everything in the book, at least you know what you are doing, and at glad it's not cancer! But does any of that matter if you don't stop and take a moment to process? Listen to Ilana discuss the reality of parenting two t1 teens for the past 12 years day in and day out and talk about the real stuff, like 'what happens after dark' and answer truthful hard questions like 'do you ever want to cry' and share her story about how it's not always sprinkles and rainbows... because that is what your family and friends want to hear. The truth is, it tough, and it's okay to talk about it. It doesn't always get easier, but you get used to your new normal. ABOUT ILANA BERGEN Ilana has been the parent of 2 type 1 diabetic teens and has over 12 years experience with T1 since the first diagnosis. She co-founded POKED (Parents Of Kids Enduring Diabetes), an online Facebook community with 9000 members and growing. Its a place for parents to read, share hide, open up and most of all support one another. Her family has written and published a book for newly diagnosed type 1 kids called Team Helping and has since formed a non-profit organization to help fund and continue the supportive resources to the community through Diabetes and Me, the hosting organization of this virtual summit. Ilana is also a consultant running her own marketing and business consulting company. Special credit to Archana M. who volunteered on DiabetesandMe.org over the summer to make this summit a reality. |
