The Recycling Association of Minnesota (RAM) seeks an executive director to lead RAM with fresh ideas, a can-do attitude, and an emphasis on fostering relationships to build the organization and bring it to the next level. The ideal candidate will have a passion for all things recycling – from organics to traditional recycling and even reuse, outstanding communications skills including experience with social media and online proficiency, a natural curiosity to learn new things, and the ability to collaborate with partners, board members, and the general public. We are looking to add an experienced professional who can carry out the organization’s new strategic plan that focuses on member education and enhancing member benefits as well as position the organization to be “the expert” on all things recycling.

HIRING SALARY RANGE AND BENEFITS:
Annual salary range of $75,000 to $90,000. Because we are a small organization, we can tailor a benefits package suitable for a successful candidate.

Position Information
The Executive Director is a full-time position that is responsible for managing several contractors responsible for specific programs or functions. The Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day activities and financial management of the organization. The Executive Director reports to the 15 to 19-member Board of Directors and its five-member Executive Committee (EC). Working together, the Executive Director, Executive Committee, and Board of Directors will develop and carry out the organization’s new strategic plan.
The organization has office space in St. Paul, but this position is open to a combination of office work and remote work.

Job Duties:
- Programs: The Executive Director will seek opportunities for RAM to best meet its mission under its new strategic plan, including building partnerships, actively participating in external committees and events where RAM’s voice would be indispensable, identifying how RAM can best participate in state and local policy discussions on waste diversion, and developing an external communications strategy on the benefits of recycling. The position will also oversee three contractors who coordinate the organization’s annual spring conference, rain barrel/compost bin sale, and accounting services.
- Member services: As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with approximately 300 members from the public and private sectors, RAM provides member benefits such as networking opportunities, a web site, a membership directory, and a bi-weekly e-mail newsletter. With volunteer board support, the Executive Director will also work to grow the membership and plan an annual member meeting including an annual report and awards program.
- Fundraising: The Executive Director will work with the board on funding opportunities to support programs that follow our new strategic plan, write grant proposals as needed, solicit new members and sponsors, collaborate with partners, and comply with any reporting requirements.
- Administration/Financial Management: The Executive Director hires and manages staff and/or contractors to fulfill the organization’s mission. In the first few months, the board will confer with the successful candidate to reassess staff, contractors, board of directors, and board committee roles for maximum efficiency and effectiveness. The Executive Director will work with the board’s Treasurer and RAM’s accounting firm to ensure compliance with all state and federal requirements related to IRS filings, worker’s comp, and sales taxes. This team will also produce accurate and timely financial reports including cash flow projections. In addition, the Executive Director works with the Treasurer to develop an annual budget.
Experience:
The minimum qualifications required for this position are:
- At least three years of experience managing a staff of similar size, including contractors, and budget level ($100,000-$500,000 a year)
- Working knowledge, passion, and commitment on environmental topics.
- Proficiency in using contact management software and social media.
- Strategic leadership ability, curiosity to learn new things, ability to successfully collaborate with people inside and outside the organization, a can-do entrepreneurial attitude, and a great deal of energy and creativity for the position.
- Demonstrated success in fundraising at all levels from grant writing, sponsorship, earned income, and/or membership.
- Ability to be an organizational spokesperson to external audiences including media, policy makers, or other members of the public.
- Strong organizational skills and willingness to accept responsibility and to work independently with board guidance.
- Ability to work closely with a diverse, volunteer, non-profit board to effectively implement a strategic plan.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and a clean background check.
- Ability to lift 30 pounds.
- Ability to travel to meetings and events with a personal vehicle, including to Greater Minnesota.
- Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours.
- Eligibility to work in the United States.
The Preferred Candidate Will Have:
- Previous experience as an executive director of a non-profit organization.
- Three to six years of experience in program and project management, membership development, outreach, fundraising, and administration/financial management. Preference given for experience in solid waste, waste diversion, and environmental fields.
- Strong knowledge, passion, and commitment, specifically on recycling.
- Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to lead, teach, and mentor others to help change happen.
- Attention to detail, strong analytical skills including data management and research, and the ability to produce accurate and precise reports, record keeping and communication.
- Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office Suite, online meeting platforms, accounting software, and contact management platforms.
- Ability to show initiative, organize workflow, manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to problem-solve, think “out of the box”, and innovate new ideas.
- Public policy skills, including coalition building, policy development, legislative tracking, and sharing knowledge with members.
- Experience in promoting diversity and cross-cultural collaborations.
