Carnegie Kids in the Woods Day Camp

In collaboration with Carnegie Hall and with support from the Snowshoe Foundation, the Yew Mountain Center is excited to offer this 3-day outdoor program designed to motivate and instill a love for learning in your child. Through the arts and sciences, children will explore the many different facets of the natural world. Filled with fun, educational classes, outdoor games, story telling, pottery, crafts, nature hikes, and more! For ages 7-12.
$20/session (morning or afternoon), $40/day, OR $90 for all 3 days

Daily Schedule:
9 a.m. - 11 a.m. Class 1 11 a.m. -12 p.m. Games and activities w/ Yew Staff 12:00 Lunch 12:30 - 1p.m. Songs, game, story, or craft 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. Class 2 July 25 Morning class: Leather crafting w/ Luke Adams Learn the basics of leather working as you design and decorate your own bracelet. Afternoon class: Appalachian Medicinals w/ Jan Darrah and Medicinal Plant Walk w/ Yew Staff Learn about various Appalachian medicinal herbs and the science behind why they are effective---or not! Students will have the chance to taste or smell herbal nonalcoholic glycerin tinctures to identify the taste or aroma of various common Appalachian medicinals. Herbs discussed will include elderberry, ginseng, plantain, goldenseal, dandelion, burdock, and others. July 26 Morning class: Creations w/ Natural pigments and DIY art supplies w/ Yew Staff Explore the world of color that is all around you. Students will make a variety of pigments and paints with rocks, plants, etc. and learn about application techniques from items found in nature to create their own piece of artwork. Afternoon class: Clay demonstration & workshop w/ Sean O’Connell Learn where clay comes from, the basic techniques of building and forming with clay, and how to create functional pieces of art. July 27 Morning class: African/cubism-inspired Masks w/ Margaret Baker Make an original African mask using recycled cardboard. Inspired by the work of Kimmy Cantrell. Afternoon class: Follow the Drinking Gourd w/ Mary Dailey: The Drinking Gourd names a constellation in the night sky that helped runaway slaves find their way to freedom. Explore this fascinating story using cryptology, African-American call and response song, a hands-on gourd experience and an astronomy art project. |
