SIF works primarily within the standards development organizations with space committees. These are the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Subcommittee 13 for Space Data and Information Transfer (TC20/SC13) , ISO Subcommittee 14 for Space Systems and Operations (TC20/SC14) and the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).

Within the AIAA we have taken a leadership role in the development of Space Plug and Play Avionics:
- SIF is a leader in the development of a strategy for space standards development within SC14. Working with the Heads of Delegation from all P-member countries, we are defining which future standards need to be developed for a growing space industry.
- By connecting sponsor organizations with standards efforts we enable resource allocation to those standards with the highest market benefit. For example, SIF funds the US Head of Delegation travel to international meetings to represent US interests with funds from US sponsors.
