What is PKU?
Phenylketonuria (known as PKU) is an inherited metabolic disease affecting the brain through increased levels of a substance called phenylalanine (Phe) in the blood. An amino acid, Phe is a building block of protein and is found in all proteins, most foods, and in some artificial sweeteners. My PKU Awareness Foundation has partner with the NPKUA to bring the 1st PKU Gala to Houston. The NPKUA works to improve the lives of individuals with PKU by providing educational services for the full life spectrum; initial diagnosis, school age, teen and adult support, and maternal health. The educational pieces and information available in this section will cover the technical, practical, and emotional details of living with PKU. |

Why we started a 501c3In 2013, God blessed us with our first angel Mia Bella. 2 years later, God blessed us with another angel, Amberly Angelina, who was born with PKU.. Currently, there is NO CURE for PKU, and while there are two new treatments that exist today, Amberly Angelina is not able to take them currently. She depends on the unimaginably restrictive low-protein diet as treatment, and we are not satisfied with that. Our ultimate goal is a cure for Amberly Angelina, and we wanted you to be one of the first to know that Saulo and I have agreed to be part of the effort to reach one!
Saulo and I are honored to be Co-Chairing the November 11, 2023, Lifting the Limits for PKU gala in Houston alongside PKU parents Jessica & Gabe Alaniz and genetic counselors Kate Mowrey and Megan Morand Richardson. The gala is an opportunity to raise awareness and much-needed funds for more effective treatments and a cure for our children. My ask of you, your family, and friends is for you to join us and be an integral part of the success of the gala to enable us to reach more people outside of our small PKU community to increase awareness and financial support. How can you help: Attend the gala, sponsor a table, bring friends to the gala, or help us obtain auction items and sponsorships. When, Where, & Time: This memorable night will take place on Saturday, November 11, 2023 Cocktails and Silent Auction At 6:00 pm Seated Dinner / Dessert / Live Auction / Dancing Emcee: Scott Pelley, Award-winning journalist and 60 Minutes correspondent Why: As you know, it takes a village and a community to enable change and to make a difference. History shows us that parents and families affected by rare disease get the job done. This is a one-time-only fundraising gala in Houston. Please join us on this journey to make Houston history for PKU. |
