Historical Inequities
San Diego's legacy of systemic inequities has profoundly shaped the city's urban landscape and continues to impact its communities today. From the discriminatory practices of redlining that denied Black and immigrant families access to homeownership, to zoning laws that segregated neighborhoods and limited economic opportunities, these historical injustices have left lasting scars. The repercussions are evident in the environmental challenges faced by marginalized communities, including limited access to green spaces, exposure to pollution, and vulnerability to climate change. Addressing these inequities is not only a matter of environmental justice but also a critical step toward building a more inclusive and sustainable future for all San Diegans.
