Hawaiian Islands 2016

Hawaiian Islands 2016

Picture
In early January a COI expedition team from Cabrillo College visited three Hawaiian Islands in a ten day “Trash Talking Tour”. We learned from local groups about their particular problems and some of the responses and techniques they employed to combat them. We held collective meetings and gave presentations on our ideas and PTF technology as potential tool to use in plastic pollution reduction.

Our team was greeted with open arms and we learned what Aloha really means. On Kahuku beach we tried out efficient plastic/sand separators, and on Hawaii Island we learned the spiritual approach to cleaning the land and sea.

Our team met with educators from grammar school to University of Hawaii to expand our network in this common cause. In a few short hours, we removed nearly a thousand pounds of debris from the shoreline and raised the education bar for our students and faculty team members. Our team has a new perspective on the scope of the problem and an introduction to those who are making a difference.
