Kelp Cleanup Paddle for World Ocean Day
What a beautiful day for a paddle! On Saturday, June 8th, we launched our vessels at Natural Bridges and embarked on an exciting journey through the offshore kelp forests, collecting marine debris. We waited patiently for the perfect moment to launch each craft, and then we "hit the ocean paddling".
As we cruised through the kelp, we made sure to maintain a safe distance from the local wildlife. We were delighted to spot six sea otters in one patch and three in another. Our route took us past Seal Rock, home to numerous seals, cormorants, and an impressive Stellar Sea Lion Bull, estimated to weigh around 2,000 lbs and measure 10 feet in length!
The ocean was calm, making for an enjoyable and serene experience. While exploring the beautiful kelp beds, we diligently searched for debris. Fortunately, we found only a small amount, a testament to the many ocean stewards in our community who are dedicated to preserving our marine environment.
