albany BEACH CLEANUP
september 18, 2024

Establishment of "Clean Oceans Albany"!

COI returned to train our First Official Beach Adoption Team - "Clean Oceans Albany"! This team will conduct surveys on a regular basis and share the data with COI. The continuation of repeated surveys on this beach will provide valuable learning experiences and information.

The COI team was joined by a group of Albany community members to conduct COI's scientific EPAP survey. While they gathered debris and tracked data, another team member worked outside the survey boundaries, collecting as much debris as possible.

Continuing with the usual story of this beach, despite significant efforts from concerned citizens who regularly remove most of the large debris, the beach still had a substantial amount of small plastic trash. Over the course of 2.5 hours, with only enough time to complete 3/4 of the survey, we collected a staggering 486 pieces of small plastic debris. Although the total weight of our collected trash was only 2 pounds, it's a stark reminder that every piece of plastic, no matter how small, counts.

As happens with most plastic survey field days, we had the pleasure of meeting several beach-goers who were inspired by our efforts and eager to contributing to future surveys. These interactions always make our day more rewarding, reinforcing the importance of community engagement in our mission.

Every piece of trash we collect brings us one step closer to a cleaner environment, and we're grateful for the support and enthusiasm of the local community. Thank you to everyone who helped make this day a success!
