albany BEACH CLEANUP
juLY 8, 2024

Albany Beach Post-4th-of-July Weekend Cleanup

On Monday, July 8, the COI team returned to Albany Beach, situated outside the Berkeley/Oakland area. Our repeated surveys of this beach have always provided valuable learning experiences.

During this trip, five team members conducted our scientific plastic assessment survey while another team member worked outside the survey boundaries, collecting as much trash as possible.

Despite significant efforts from concerned citizens who had already removed most of the large debris, the beach still had a substantial amount of small plastic trash. Over the course of three hours, we collected a staggering 691 pieces of small plastic debris. Although the total weight of our collected trash was only one pound, it's a stark reminder that every piece of plastic, no matter how small, counts.

We also had the pleasure of meeting several beachgoers who were inspired by our efforts and eager to connect us with others interested in contributing to our cause. These interactions made our day even more rewarding, reinforcing the importance of community engagement in our mission.

Every piece of trash we collect brings us one step closer to a cleaner environment, and we're grateful for the support and enthusiasm of the local community. Thank you to everyone who helped make this day a success!
The COI Team, happy to be back at Albany Beach for a plastic survey!
Tobie was a rockstar - collecting debris outside of the scientific assessment area.
Homer and Barbara, pitching in and having fun!
Ensuring that our survey setup is correct.
Sieving for microplastics ranging in size from 1mm to 5mm.
There were 48 pieces of microplastics in this sieve sample. This is a large amount.
A lot of time was spent near the wrack line where a majority of debris often accumulates.
Plastic accumulation in the wrack line.
Dave enjoying the day doing SCIENCE!
Documenting the VERY HIGH numbers of small plastic collected during our survey.
This tiny amount added up to 691 pieces of plastic trash that weighed only ONE POUND!!! It took almost 3 hours to collect and it can feel discouraging to have such a small amount in our bucket. But - EVERY PIECE COUNTS!
The bucket on the right collected outside our survey ended up weighing 12 pounds. Thanks, Tobie!
