Hey y’all! My name is Faith Watson. As a student intern and office assistant for New Healthcare Concepts, embracing my passion for senior care is the reason for the job. You may ask why a 20 year old woman is so passionate about senior care. In 2008 my Pawpaw Sam was diagnosed with dementia, specifically vascular dementia. Vascular dementia is characterized by mini strokes that damage neurons in the brain. My mom and her two sisters cared for my Pawpaw from 2010 until 2012 in his own home. In the summer of 2012 as a family, we had to put him in a skilled nursing facility for his safety. At that point, my Pawpaw was not able to stay by himself at night and none of our family could stay with him. Finding the best nursing home for both him and our family was difficult. We decided on a care facility that we thought would make everyone comfortable, especially Pawpaw. We realized that splitting up the days among my mom and aunts would help us be with Pawpaw on a normal basis while setting a schedule that fit everyone’s routines.
During my many visits, I found out that a lot of the residents did not have visitors. As a result, I learned that a resident that we will call Ms. Betty wrote a children’s book and to occupy her time she would write a newsletter for the nursing home. She loved talking to people because it was an integral part of her former occupation. I also got to know a man named Mr. Bob. He was immobile since he was younger. Mr. Bob could not communicate in the typical way but loved when we would sing to him. I was around twelve when my Pawpaw was placed into the nursing home and I visited until he passed away in 2015. Being allowed to visit him up until he took his last breath gave me a greater appreciation for family and my elders.
Since you now know my story of how I got introduced to my passion of taking care of the senior population, it is now time to hear from you. Please leave a comment letting me know how you came to be a caregiver? I can’t wait to get to know each and everyone of you.
