Dr. Wolfgang Maurer (MD, PhD)

Dr. Wolfgang Maurer has for many years been the person in charge of evaluations of vaccines and blood products in Austria, both during licensure as well as for batch testing. He was part of regulatory bodies such as EMA (London) and European Pharmocopoiea (Strassbourg) and headed the Official Medicines Control Laboratory for vaccines and blood products (OMCL). There, he was responsible for the batch release of HIV diagnostics. Dr. Maurer received his PhD in Biochemistry and his MD in Vienna University with a board certification in Laboratory Medicine. Dr. Maurer is a senior lecturer at the Medical University of Vienna and a well-known vaccine expert in Austria who has been a long-standing member of the Austrian Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and the National HIV/AIDS committee. For decades, he was responsible for all aspects of vaccinology at the Medical University of Vienna, Department for Paediatrics, including clinical and non-clinical research. Dr. Maurer was a member of a WHO mission in Ukraine during the Diptheria outbreak in the 1990s and was one of the first graduates of the Advanced Course of Vaccinology (ADVAC) in Annecy. He recently retired from the Center for Public Health at the Medical University of Vienna, where his latest research was focused on vaccine safety communication and studies of the vaccine debate in social media. He still is a frequent advisor on vaccine-related questions and adverse events following immunization (AEFI). Dr. Maurer has given over 200 presentations on vaccine safety, immunology, and the anti-vaccine movement and has published widely in peer reviewed journals, and he still teaches Vaccinology at the Medical University of Vienna.
